Cargill Recalls Ground Beef Over E-Coli Concerns  (08/30/2010)

Agribusiness giant Cargill has recalled 85-hundred pounds of ground beef over E-Coli concerns.  In making the announcement Saturday, the U.S. Agriculture Department said officials determined a cluster of illnesses in Maine and New York are related to the products.  Officials said the tainted hamburger was sold at BJ's Wholesale Club in
eight states earlier this summer, but the USDA is concerned some product may still be in consumers' freezers.  The recalled hamburger bears the USDA establishment number
''EST. 9400,'' an identifying product code of "W69032'' and has a use or freeze by date of July 1st.

Salmonella Outbreak Forces Egg Recall (08/18/2010)

One of America's largest egg companies is the focus of a nationwide recall because of possible salmonella contamination.  Wright Country Eggs, based in Galt, Iowa, initiated a voluntary recall of eggs packaged between May 16th and August 13th.  The eggs were marketed with a number of brand names and were shipped to eight states.  But because companies in those states distribute nationwide, the massive recall was undertaken.  The potentially tainted eggs can be identified by checking the stamp on the end of the carton.  If the stamp reads P1026, P1413 or P1946, consumers are asked to look at the three-digit number that follows.  If it's anywhere between 136 and 225, the eggs are suspect and should be destroyed.  The CDC believes salmonella outbreaks in California, Colorado and Minnesota are tied to eggs produced by the Iowa company.  Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever vomiting and abdominal cramps.

Mazda Recalls 215,000 Vehicles For Steering Problems (08/18/2010)

Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 vehicles are being recalled because the power steering could suddenly fail.   The vehicles included in the recall were made from 2007 to 2009.  The Japanese automaker says the recalled cars could loose their power steering without warning, increasing the chances of an accident.  Mazda did not give details of any accidents when it filed the problem with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Monday.

The automaker plans to start sending out recall notices in September and all owners with affected vehicles should be notified by February.  Meantime, Mazda admits it has a shortage of parts to fix the glitch.  A preliminary investigation into the problem was opened by the NHTSA in June.

RECALL: Nissan Cube

Nissan is recalling 46-thousand Cube hatchbacks because they leak too much fuel during rear-end crashes.  The 2009 and 2010 model year Cubes failed rear crash tests, reports the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.  The agency said that the fuel leaks could result in a fire if there was any sort of spark or ignition source near the crash.  Dealers will install a special protector that attaches to the gas recirculation tube.  The part and its installation will be provided free of charge.  Cube owners can also visit the agency website at www.SaferCar.gov.

Roger Ebert

In case you were wondering what film critic Roger Ebert thinks of the now-famous portrait of his cancer-wracked face, he's okay with it.  The striking and unsettling photograph appeared on the cover of this month's "Esquire" magazine, which profiled the prolific reviewer, blogger and author.  Ebert wrote yesterday on his blog for the Chicago "Sun-Times" quote, "I got a jolt from the full-page photograph of my jaw drooping."  But he then reconsidered, saying, quote, "It's just as well it's out there.  That's how I look, after all."

He even re-posted the photograph along with a lengthy and eloquent take on the "Esquire" article, which describes his battle against the silence imposed by throat cancer.  The only aspect of the piece Ebert says he disliked was the implication that he's dying.  Ebert says he's not, and Chicago's most venerable newspaper columnist would like everyone to know he's pretty happy these days.

DRUG RECALL -  Johnson and Johnson has launched a major recall of some popular over-the-counter products.  The latest voluntary recall includes Tylenol, Motrin and Rolaids, expanding on an issue that led to a Tylenol recall last year.  The company said it took the action in response to consumer complaints of an unusual moldy, musty or mildew odor, which was associated with stomach distress in a small number of cases.  Such events included nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.  The FDA was critical of the company for its slow response to similar complaints involving Tylenol caplets in 2008.  The recall of more than 53 million bottles of products also involves the allergy drug Benadryl and St. Joseph's Aspirin.  A spokeswoman for Johnson and Johnson's McNeil Consumer division blamed the odor on wood pallets or packaging materials used to ship the products.  The company said it was working with the FDA to investigate the problem.

About one-and-a-half-million baby strollers are being recalled.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission cites concerns over severe fingertip injuries to children caused by the canopies on the Graco strollers.  There have been two fingertip lacerations and five fingertip amputations.  The strollers were made in China and sold at stores in the U.S. between October 2004 and December 2009.

  • Consumer Product Safety Commission Recalls Millions Of Cribs

(Washington, DC)  --  The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling more than two-million drop-side cribs.  The products were all produced by Stork Craft Manufacturing of British Columbia.  Included in the recall are about 147-thousand Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo.  The CPSC says various malfunctions of the cribs pose choking, suffocation and other hazards to children.  Four infants have died in crib-related accidents.

The CPSC is asking parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for a free repair kit and not to try to fix the cribs without the kit.  The free repair kit converts the drop-side of the crib to a fixed side and can be obtained through the Stork Craft website at StorkCraft.com

The agency says the drop-side plastic hardware of the affected cribs can break, deform or fall off.  The issue can cause the side to detach in one or more corners, creating a hazardous space between the crib and the mattress.  Retailers in the U.S. who sold the affected cribs include JC Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby and Wal-Mart.  Online vendors include Amazon, Babiesrus, Costco, Target and Walmart.  The cribs were sold from January 1993 through October of this year.

    BPA'S IN FOOD
(Washington, DC)  --  A potentially dangerous chemical may be lurking in the packaging of many common foods.  That's according to a new study by the nonprofit consumer advocacy group Consumers Union.  The study focuses on a controversial chemical additive used to harden plastic, BPA.  Consumers Union tested BPA levels in 19 name-brand foods sold in metal, paper or plastic packages.  It found none in products like paper canisters of Similac powdered Advance Infant Formula or Nestle Juicy Juice boxes.  However, it found enough BPA in some foods, like cans of Del Monte Fresh Cut Blue Lake Green Beans, to raise a red flag.  The Consumers Union report claims children who eat multiple servings of such foods could ingest enough BPA to see negative health effects.  The chemical was even found in some foods that were labeled "BPA-free."

Last year, the Food and Drug Administration released a draft report that said BPA was safe to use in food containers.  However, critics point to studies that suggest BPA may lead to an array of health problems, including cancer, diabetes and reproductive abnormalities.  Consumers Union sent a letter to the FDA claiming the new report helps make the case for banning BPA in products that come in contact with food and beverages.

Image: A pilgrim shows off the leg of baby Ali YakubovTHOUSANDS LINE-UP TO SEE MIRACLE BOY - Up to two-thousand Muslims from the northern region of Russia are daily making the pilgrimage to the small Russian town of Kizlyar to see nine-month-old Ali Yakubov.  The child's parents claim verses of the Koran appear and disappear on the child's body.  Witnesses say last week the verse "Be thankful or grateful to Allah" appeared in Arabic on the blue-eyed toddler's leg.  Later, the verse faded away.  The infant's mother claims the Koranic verses began appearing on the child two weeks after birth, and says Allah has sent her a "miracle child to keep the people safe."  The head of the Kizlyar region said the child is a sign from God.  Skeptics say the clamour around the baby is a diversion from the mounting Islamist militant threat in the area.

Toyota Throttle Problems May Not Be Related To Floormats

(San Diego, CA, October 19, 2009)  --  Throttle control problems reported in some Toyota and Lexus vehicles may not all be related to faulty floor mats as claimed by Toyota.  The "Los Angeles Times"  reports an investigation finds the situation may be far more dire than originally thought.  The "Times" quotes automotive experts who say the combination of keyless ignition -- which requires a button be pressed for three seconds before the engine can be shut down -- along with transmission controls and computerized throttles may make millions of vehicles unsafe.

Toyota previously blamed the stuck gas pedal hazard on floor mats and ordered the recall of nearly four-million vehicles so the mats can be inspected.  The possible electronic and mechanical issues haven't been addressed publicly by the automaker.

A recent case apparently involving a stuck throttle ended the life of an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and his family.  The officer, Mark Saylor, was driving a loaner Lexus while his was in a shop.  The 19-year CHP veteran may not have been familiar with the requirement that a button be held for three seconds to kill the engine.  In addition, the configuration of the sport shifter makes it difficult to shift into neutral.

The officer's wife, daughter and brother-in-law were in the car when the throttle stuck wide open on a San Diego freeway.  The brother-in-law dialed 911 to report, quote, "We're in trouble, there's no brakes," just before screams were heard.  Witnesses have reported the brakes were on fire as the car flew through an off-ramp intersection at more than 120 miles an hour, struck another vehicle, flew off the road, overturned and burst into flames.  Everyone inside was killed.

A crying face is revealed in an ice cap located on Nordaustlandet in the Svalbard archipelago in Norway: Icecap photo shows 'mother nature in tears'

A striking photo is causing quite a stir among environmentalists.  The picture dubbed "mother nature in tears" shows a waterfall streaming down the side of a melting Norwegian ice cap.  Many people who have seen the image claim it resembles the face of a crying woman.  The photo was taken by marine photographer and environmental lecturer Michael Nolan this summer during an annual trip to Norway's largest ice cap, Austfonna.  The World Glacier Monitoring Service estimates that ice cap has been shrinking by up to 160 feet a year for decades.  Nolan tells London's "Telegraph" newspaper it seemed as if Mother Nature was, quote, "crying about our inability to reduce global warming."

THE MOVE TO SMALLER MORE FUEL EFFICIENT CARS CAN COME AT PRICE....

Even minor fender benders can cause very EXPENSIVE damage to tiny cars.  The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety has released a report this morning involving tests of seven mini and microcar bumpers.  None of the cars was rated good after being thumped in several all too common ways and only one earned a rating of acceptable.  IIHS bumped the tiny vehicles at the corners moving into a barrier at just three miles-per-hour and straight on from the front and rear at six miles-per-hour.  The worst performer of the bunch is the Kia Rio that suffered more than nine-thousand dollars damage.  The Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent and Mini Cooper also earned poor ratings in the bumper performance check.  Of all the vehicles the Smart Fortwo was best suffering just under 33-hundred dollars damage in all four tests. The Chevy Aveo was second best with about 45-hundred dollars total damage.
The full report is available on the Institute website www.iihs.org.

In a recent poll conducted by the websites Date.com, Matchmaker.com and Amor.com, both sexes gave varying answers on which older male/younger female celebrity pairing would be the best.  The women leaned towards actor Jack Nicholson and reality star Kim Kardashian, with nearly 42-percent choosing that option.  But actor Mickey Rourke and heiress Paris Hilton topped the men's list, garnering 25-percent of the vote.  The only thing both sexes could agree upon was their last place choice -- actors Samuel L. Jackson and Camilla Belle.  The idea of that couple was favored by just six-percent of the men and only four-percent of the women.

TURN OFF THOSE COMPUTERS TO SAVE MONEY!

Businesses are wasting billions of dollars by leaving their personal computers on at night.  That's the assessment of a report released today by an energy management software company and the Alliance to Save Energy.  The report says U.S. organizations spend two-point-eight-billion-dollars a year to power unused machines which emit about 20-million tons of carbon dioxide.  The 2009 PC Energy Report, produced by 1E, analyzed workplace PC power consumption in the U.S., United Kingdom and Germany.  Simply shutting down PCs at night, the report says, can save a company with ten-thousand PCs more than 260-thousand-dollars a year and more than 18-hundred tons of carbon dioxide emissions. MEAT KILLS... TOO HARSH OR GOOD ADVISE?
The National Cancer Institute researchers found just four ounces of beef or pork a day is a pretty good indication you'll be measured for your coffin sooner than folks who stick mostly to poultry and fish.  The study's being billed as the most comprehensive look at flesh-eating folks and their mortality rates.  The 545-thousand subjects aged 50 to 71 were followed between 1995 and 2005.  They all filled out a questionnaire about their diets.  Roughly 48-thousand men and 23-thousand women died in the decade of the study.  Researchers say eleven-percent of those men and 16-percent of the women would still be alive if they'd cut their daily red meat or pork consumption.  For women, those who ate the most red meat on a daily basis were 20-percent more likely to die of cancer and 50-percent more likely to die of heart disease.  Men were 22-percent more likely to die of cancer and 27-percent more likely to die of heart disease if , they at the equivalent of a small hamburger every day.

Those who eat any sort of sausage, hot dogs or cold cuts on a daily basis faced similar spikes in mortality, likely because of the nitrates and their link to cancer.  Compare that to the turkey- and chicken-lovers, whose death rate was eight-percent lower than the rest.  Researchers say you don't have to go all-veggie to lengthen your life, just cut down red meat consumption to small portions no more than a few times a week.

Findings are published in the journal "Archives of Internal Medicine."  - (Source - MetroSource News 03/24/09)

    SEXTING DANGER REAL! NOT VIRTUAL

A Cincinnati couple is launching a national campaign hoping to have laws passed to address the growing issue of sexting.  This fairly recent phenomenon involves teenagers and even pre-teens sending nude or partially clothed photos of themselves to friends, usually with a cell phone.  That's what Jessica Logan did last year and it's the reason she ended up hanging herself, taking her own life in her bedroom.  The "Cincinnati Enquirer" reports Jessie's mother and father, Cynthia and Albert Logan, now want to warn teens that sending racy photos of themselves can result in harassment, humiliation and bullying when the picture, originally meant only for a boyfriend as in their daughter's case, ends up being forwarded to dozens of people.  The couple's New York attorney, Parry Aftab knows the issue well.  She runs a couple of cyber safety websites including the world's oldest and largest, wiredsafety.org.

Shannon was sentenced to 300 hours of community service. His lawyer says, "He had absolutely no idea that the person who was in the shop with him was going to put this on YouTube. I don't think there has been any suggestion that any member of the public was harmed. No-one would have had any of that lettuce because it was discarded."
